Ujjain Road Widening Near Mahakal Temple: 39 House-Shop Portions Removed for Simhastha 2028

Road widening steps up ahead of Simhastha 2028

Ahead of the Simhastha Mahakumbh in Ujjain, the Municipal Corporation has stepped up work to widen the road running from in front of the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple to the Mahakal Ghati intersection. Along a stretch of about 200 metres, portions of 39 houses, shops and hotels falling within the road alignment have been removed. JCBs were used at the site and police personnel were deployed, while several residents were also seen removing the affected portions themselves.

Road to be widened from 12 to 24 metres

Municipal Corporation Additional Commissioner Santosh Tagore said the road had been proposed since 2022. After the Master Plan was amended, a 24-metre-wide road was provided for this stretch. The road is currently about 12 metres wide and will be widened to 24 metres to handle the expected rise in traffic during Simhastha.

39 structures affected; owners clearing belongings

A total of 39 residents and their structures are affected by the widening. Residents are voluntarily removing their belongings and structures from the affected portions.

Legal clearances and court order

The matter had been in court for nearly three years over the road widening. The corporation began action after an order from the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. A technical team marked the affected portions for demolition, after which the corporation began action with JCBs and police personnel. Many shops and restaurants in the area remained closed during the action.

Traders given a day's grace

Local traders and shopkeepers met corporation officials when action began, saying their business was being hit by the festival season and seeking 24 hours to clear goods from their shops and houses. Officials granted a day's grace, with the anti-encroachment drive set to resume. The corporation's team then arrived at the spot with JCBs and police personnel and began the demolition.
