If you are visiting this week, you no longer need to buy prasad at Mahakal

The one errand that used to sit at the end of a Mahakaleshwar darshan — finding prasad — has been removed. From Friday, 2 October 2026, every devotee who completes darshan at Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar Temple can collect prasad offered to Baba Mahakal free of cost, from counters set up on the exit routes inside the temple premises. No purchase, no queue at a separate shop, no fee. If you are packing for a Ujjain trip in October, you can leave the prasad shopping out of your list.

What the temple committee decided

The Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee decided that every devotee visiting the temple should be given prasad that was offered to the deity. Deputy Collector and Deputy Administrator Simmi Yadav said the initiative has been launched in line with the vision of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, with the stated aim that no visitor leaves the Jyotirlinga without Baba Mahakal's prasad. She said the free prasad distribution counter has been opened near the exit channel inside the temple premises. Flowers and belpatra offered at the temple are also to be given to devotees as blessings.

Where the counters are, and when prasad starts

Distribution happens on the way out, not on the way in. News18 reported the counters are being set up on the temple's two main exit routes — the Exit Tunnel and the Exit Ramp near Nandi Hall — so that pilgrims pick up prasad as they leave rather than adding a stop to the darshan itself. Timing follows the ritual schedule: distribution begins after the morning puja-archana, and only once naivedya and bhog have been formally offered to Lord Mahakal. The committee has not published a fixed clock time, so treat the post-bhog window as the guide rather than any specific hour.

What is actually in the packet

Dainik Jagran reported that the packets contain dry prasad made from roasted gram (chana), chironji and revdi, packed so that devotees can easily carry them home after leaving the temple. AV News reported a wider five-item mix that also included groundnut and rice, and described the arrangement as a restoration of an exit-gate service that had been shut for a long time and had in effect been a VIP-only privilege. The scale at launch was modest but real: the initiative began with an offering of around 1.25 quintals of mahaprasadi to Baba Mahakal, after which it was distributed among devotees. Both Dainik Jagran and Navbharat Live described the daily free arrangement as the first of its kind in the temple's history.

What pilgrims should do differently now

Plan the exit, not the entrance. Keep a small amount of space in your bag for a packet that will be heavier and bulkier than a single laddu, and expect flowers and belpatra in the same handout, which is bulky and best carried in a bag rather than held through darshan. Do not budget for prasad purchases on the Mahakal route any more. One thing that is not yet confirmed: the committee has published no end-time or stock limit for the day's packets, so very late-evening visitors may find the counters finished for the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is prasad really free at Mahakaleshwar Temple now? A: Yes. Every devotee who completes darshan is to receive prasad offered to Baba Mahakal at no charge, from counters near the exit, from 2 October 2026.

Q: Do I still need to buy prasad anywhere? A: Not for the temple's own prasad. Separate paid items such as the ‘Shri Ann Prasadam’ laddu counters in the Mahakal Lok area are a different arrangement and are unaffected.

Q: Where exactly are the counters? A: On the exit side inside the premises — News18 reported two, on the Exit Tunnel and the Exit Ramp near Nandi Hall, with the Free Press Journal describing a counter near the exit channel.

Q: What time should I arrive to collect it? A: Distribution starts after the morning puja-archana and after naivedya and bhog are offered to the deity. No fixed clock time has been announced, so follow temple staff on the day.

Q: What comes in the packet? A: Dainik Jagran reported chana, chironji and revdi as dry prasad; AV News reported a five-item mix including groundnut and rice. Flowers and belpatra offered at the temple are also being distributed.

Q: Was this free prasad available before? A: Reported by AV News — the older exit-gate prasad service had been shut for a long time and in practice only VIP devotees were receiving it. The committee frames the current arrangement as new.
